The UK will become an associated country to the Erasmus+ programme from 2027, following an agreement between the EU and the UK. This means that students, academic staff, educational institutions and organisations will benefit from the same conditions as those of EU Member States and other countries associated with the programme. The move will boost people-to-people exchanges and expand cooperation between the EU and the UK. The agreement was reached at a summit in May 2025.

As Ursula von der Leyen noted, further strengthening centuries-old educational ties will benefit both students and teachers, as well as the economies and societies of the countries in general. This step will create new opportunities for thousands of students and staff, support the development of skills for the future, and strengthen inclusiveness in international mobility.

In addition, the agreement will support the deepening of partnerships between EU and UK educational institutions, the development of innovative teaching and training methods, the use of new technologies and support for both formal and non-formal education. The European Commission will work closely with the UK partners to ensure the effective implementation of the programme, while the UK will designate a National Agency to coordinate its participation in Erasmus+ from 2027.

At this stage, in addition to the 27 EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey participate in the Erasmus+ programme. From 1 January 2027, the UK and Switzerland will also join the programme.
